Thoughts on the Passage

Mary now comes to Jesus.

It is a difficult meeting for both Jesus and Mary. Mary is hurting. She has lost a brother and she knew that Lazarus would be alive if Jesus came on time to heal him. She can also count the days… she knew that Jesus did not come right away but was delayed. Her response is one of weeping – powerful sobbing and crying. The sobbing and words of Mary moved Jesus deeply and He sobbed and wept as well. This is not tears coming down, it was sobbing from Jesus.

Jesus moves everyone to the tomb. Somehow, He had to get their attention off of themselves, their hurt, their sadness and move it on what He wants to do for them. It often means bringing them to the place where they come face to face with the issue.

Jesus is about to do something powerful and miraculous as the “Resurrection and the Life”, but He is surrounded by people who have no faith that it can be done. What is He supposed to do? Jesus required a measure of faith so that He could do His miracle. There is no one who understands what He can do in this moment – not the disciples, not Mary, not Martha, not the other people around… no one.

There are days like this in everyone’s life. It is a difficult day for us as we struggling with an issue only God can deal with. It is a difficult day for Jesus, Who has much to give, but people unwilling or unable to receive it.

Application

Does God keep directing our attention to some place in our lives that we think is unchangeable?Take a moment, let God open our hearts. It could be a bondage that just cannot be broken… a wound that never gets healed… a hope that is shattered… a promise from God that seems broken…

Let God take us today to that point where we come face to face with it. Wait on God. He has something that He wants to do in this moment. Yesterday, we talked about the faith of a child. Today we sit like a child and wait.

Time to Pray

Father, this is a difficult place to sit. I know that I would go to many places that I want You to fix or change. Instead, I am in the place where You have taken me. It is a painful place. It is a place where I felt betrayed by You in the past. It is a place where I do not want to come because there are so many tough things to face. I come because You brought me here. In this place, I wait to see what You want to show me - what You plan to do. It brings so much back to my mind and I do not know how to handle them. So I wait on You. Speak I pray. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
