Walking With John

DAY 13 OF 29

Dearest Mama,

There is so much assurance in John 10! Jesus our great Shepherd watches over, protects, and loves us so much that He calls us by name! Let that sink in for just a minute. He claims us as His own, and even surrendered His life so that we may share eternal life with Him.

How many of us can remember when our babies were newborn and our sweet bundles of joy would cry all the time? I specifically remember calling my mom who lived a country away from me at the time, perplexed with how to determine my baby’s cry. How do you know if they are hungry, wet, or simply tired? Her response was that by spending time with my baby, I would learn his cues. Looking back, I realized it took time to determine each cry. As a seasoned mom, I could hear his cry from across a playground and know it was my child. Even now, with no more crying infants at home, I can still tell which of my children is walking in the room. Over time, we learn our children’s noises. As His beloved sheep, we can become adept at deciphering God’s voice and presence in our lives too.

As a shepherd knows each sheep, Jesus, the true Shepherd, knows us (John 10:3-6). He desires for us to be intimately acquainted with Him as Shepherd, Redeemer, Savior, and Friend. Then, we will hear His voice, cherish His presence, be assured of His leading, and live securely in His protection. I hope you take time to reflect on Jesus as your Shepherd this Lenten Season!

"Our Good Shepherd has become the model for under-shepherds. His great concern is the good of the sheep. A good shepherd gives himself to the sheep. A thief comes to get something from the flock—wool or mutton. Jesus our Lord made every personal claim subservient to the blessing of his flock; even to giving His life that they might live." ~ Walter J. Chantry
