Relationship Advice For Men

DAY 4 OF 8

Who Can Fix it?

“My dad could fix anything mechanical. I have great memories of him under the hood of his ’57 Chevy truck, arm-deep in grease and metal. This became my vision of a man. He died before I could develop any other.” Roger Thompson, We Stood Upon Stars

Maybe, like Roger, you somehow lost the attention of your dad too young possibly due to health, work, divorce, or even addiction.

Or maybe you’re more like me. You grew up with a loving Dad who stayed engaged all throughout your life. Either way, it’s safe to bet that you’ll find yourself at some point feeling like both of us. Maybe it’s not cars for you, but when that certain something breaks, it makes you feel unfinished. For me, it happens when wife is frustrated about something in our marriage or when one of my kids seems to be showing some kind of weakness. If you’re like us, you might feel like you’re alone on the side of the road—stuck without tools or help.

Here’s what Roger’s stories can help us see. Our earthly fathers weren’t meant to be the answer to all the questions of our souls. Only God is strong enough for that. Maybe we don’t need to be able to fix it all. Maybe we need to know when and how to rely on mentors, counselors, coaches, friends, wives, repairmen, fathers, and father figures. Maybe God is the one whose arms are covered in grease, laying Himself down for our lives, with just the right tools to fix our deepest brokenness.

Watch today’s video, and then consider the question below.

Consider: How can I rely on the right people in the areas where I’m weak? Who are those people? What can I do this week to continue my journey toward placing my full trust in God?
