Parents often teach young children a small prayer to say over their meals. It begins, “God is great ….” If those same children attend church, they learn some of the great stories of the Bible, stories about God’s interventions to save His people. It’s easy to convince children that God is powerful. When we are young, everyone is powerful.

Then, however, we grow up. Soon we forget about the greatness of God. After all, if we really believed in it, would we be as greedy, lustful, angry, worried, or depressed? How would a childlike belief in God’s greatness change your life? Would you become more like Him? (2 Corinthians 3:18).

The greatness of God provides two benefits for you. First, He is greater than any other “god” or spirit in this world (1 John 4:4). Not only is He greater than any other power, but He also lives in you, giving you power and wisdom to overcome fear. Second, His plans will not fail. The Good News about Jesus will go throughout the whole earth (Psalm 86:9; Matthew 24:14). When you become discouraged, remember that you are on the winning side. As you pray for God’s will to be done here on earth, just as it is in heaven, He is ready and able to cooperate with you to see it done (Matthew 6:10). He will defeat all other “gods,” and the nations will bow before Him. Believe that, and every day will be better than the day before.
