Is There Good Debt In Business ?

DAY 1 OF 3

Day 1: Head not the tail

Proverbs tells us that the rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is a servant to the lender. Jesus tells us in Matthew that we can’t serve two masters. He implies that we should serve God and nothing else. We serve God with our time.

If we are in debt, then we are a servant to the banks and credit holders with our time until we pay back what we owe. When we are tied down with debt, we are spending our time serving our debt holders to pay them back. Therefore, we are not free to serve God with our time because our time is already accounted for.

God has called us to be the head and not the tail, above and not beneath. When God commanded the blessing on us in Deuteronomy, He said we would lend unto many nations, and not borrow. Being in debt is not operating in the blessing God has called us to.

In a way, when we borrow money, we are saying, “I cannot wait for you [God] to get the money to me, so I will get it myself.” God should be our provider — not the bank.

Hebrews teaches us that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. It does not read, “Borrowed money is the substance of things hoped for.”  God desires for us to have Faith in Him to get whatever resources we need to accomplish the vision He has given us.

Now, borrowing money is not a sin (because God called us to be the lender); however, it is not God’s best for us to the borrower. This attitude should carry over into our businesses because the borrower is always a servant to the lender, even in business. Business books preach good debt verse bad debt for business, but scripturally, all debt is bad and will put us in the position of the servant.

Don't trust the world system of debt, but instead trust God to fund the business He has given you. We will continue our study tomorrow and examine more about how we should trust God and not debt.
