Dangerously Influential

DAY 4 OF 5

Be Influential

We’ve learned about how we can choose influences wisely. But as Christ followers, we’re also called to be influential—even dangerously influential.

Jesus tells us that we are the light of the world and the salt of the earth. Basically, we are called to influence others. But the point of being influential isn’t to make a name for ourselves; it’s to point the world to God.

So, what’s up with the salt metaphor? Historically, salt was extremely valuable. It makes food last longer. A long time ago, people would pour salt into wounds to heal them. That’s where the expression, “you poured salt in my wound,” actually comes from. Salt was also used in religious rituals by the Israelites in the Old Testament. They used salt to make incense, which they used to make sacrifices to God before Jesus came to be the ultimate sacrifice.

Salt is a big deal. But you know that just a little salt goes a long way. So when Jesus called us the salt of the earth, it was monumental. Salt was crucial for healing, preserving, and making people right with God. Our lives are supposed to be the same way. Jesus is telling us that we should live lives that point back to Him and His goodness.

Essentially, you have more influence than you think, and you should use that influence wisely. You may not have a platform, but you have power because of the name of Jesus. You don’t need to be an “influencer” to have influence. You see people every day at school, at church, at the store, and at so many places who need the healing power of Jesus. And you are the salt that could lead them to Jesus.

When you’re kind and loving to a stranger, when you talk to that kid at school everyone picks on—you’re being salt. You’re living your influence out. And God is glorified because of your obedience.

Challenge: What are some ways you can be salt? How can you serve others and live a life that points people to Jesus? Choose one thing to focus on, and do it this week.

Day 3Day 5

About this Plan

Dangerously Influential

Influence is all around us. But with so many voices, how do we wisely choose who to listen to? In the same way, we’re called to become influential. But where do we start? In this 5-day Bible Plan, we’ll learn how dangerously influential the world can be, but also how we can become dangerously influential ourselves.
