Christ-Like LeadersSample
Servanthood
As Christians of the 21st century, it’s important to think about what God is asking of us in these times. There is no doubt that people nowadays are desiring to be leaders. Just take a look around – society, work, culture, – and you will see people talking about leadership. There are all sorts of workshops on how to be a leader and how to be successful. There are expensive seminars on how to become the most effective and productive leader. You can read books and magazines on leadership. When it comes to the gospel and when it comes to the “Jesus way,” leadership is different.
True leadership begins with humility. It does not matter what type of leader you are striving to be; whether it’s religious leadership, as it was in Jesus’ times or any kind of leader, but we have to be humble. What is true humility all about? I don’t know about you and the culture you grew up in, but I can tell you in mine, as a Latino, being humble, “ser humilde,” is about a certain posture and status. If you see someone who is simply dressed, maybe with a low financial status, and has a posture that sort of bends forward with eyes looking down all the time, I use to think ‘that’s not bad posture, that’s humility.’ However, humility is not an external thing. It is a set of attitudes. It’s an understanding that God is great and awesome. And we are all at the service of that one God.
If we really want to be Christ-like leaders, we must first be servants. We need to be feet washers like Jesus. People willing to get down on their hands and knees in order to lift up and help others. We need to serve others. Christian leadership is not about the title. It’s not about the public recognition or external rituals. It’s about much more than that. Through this plan I will share with you some truths that we as believers need to think about if we truly desire to be Christ-like leaders. More than ever does our world need Christ-like leaders. This applies to you whether you are a mother or father, brother or sister, the boss at work or the employee; whether you’re the top manager or the person who does maintenance, it applies to all of us. The title or position does not matter but the way we live does. Sometimes we too judge things externally and forget that God is looking at the heart.
