When Pigs Fly

DAY 5 OF 6

Miracles of Provision

Each miracle we’ve read about—deliverance, healing, protection—comes when we realize there’s no natural way out of a situation. Remember the little pig surrounded by wolves at the edge of a cliff?

Have you ever been so desperate for food, money, or some vital resource that your only option was to pray for a miracle of provision?

Jesus actually told us, more than once, how to ask for provision. Let’s look at two examples: The Lord’s Prayer, found in Matthew 6:9-13, and Ask, Seek, Knock from today’s reading in Matthew 7. These two actually come from one of Jesus’ sermons, the Sermon on the Mount.

Jesus must’ve really wanted us to remember how to pray. He basically gave us the same prayer two ways. The outline (Ask, Seek, Knock) and the book (The Lord’s Prayer). The meal (The Lord’s Prayer) and the recipe (Ask, Seek, Knock). The answer (The Lord’s Prayer) and the question (Ask, Seek, Knock).

Here are some questions for meditating on Jesus’ model prayers.

  • How have I experienced earthly fathers? Do I trust God as a heavenly Father?
  • Do I spend more energy asking for things, seeking Him, or knocking until I hear His voice?
  • Do I pray because of who I am or because of who the heavenly Father is?
  • What exactly is my daily bread? My debts? My temptation? Who do I need to forgive?
  • If His will happened in my world, what would that look like?

Pray: After meditating on these prayers, pray them with some examples inserted from your life.
