Journeying With Jesus - 40 Days Lent Devotional

DAY 18 OF 40

The One who is our Defender did not defend himself. The One who is our Intercessor did not speak up for himself. The One who is our Shield and our Fortress did not try to protect himself

He chose to be vulnerable so we could have the victory.

Pilate stands before the most unlikely King, torn between what he should do and the pressure from the crowd outside. The Roman governor goes back and forth between the belligerent mob and Jesus. He seems agitated.

In contrast, Jesus stands in perfect regality. He knows exactly what is going to happen and he is unflinching in his decision to go through with it.

In the gospel of John, Pilate asks Jesus, “Don’t you know that I have the power to either free you or to crucify you?”

Jesus is completely at ease when he responds, “You have no power over me if it were not given to you.”

Jesus rested in the sovereignty of God. Even though he was fully man, he didn’t allow doubts and fears to assail him nor did he try to talk his way out of the trial. Instead, he trusted that his Father was in perfect control. He saw the big picture. The really, really big picture. He saw things from an eternal perspective – and yielded his life for us.

Bringing It Home

Am I resting in God’s sovereignty? Or do I fear for my future? Do I allow God to be my Defender or do I feel the need to constantly defend myself?

Lean In

Heavenly Father, Thank you for the example of Jesus who was silent before authorities. Thank you that he shows us what it means to trust in your sovereignty and rest in your promises. Thank you for the best gift of all – eternal life in Jesus. Amen

About this Plan

Journeying With Jesus - 40 Days Lent Devotional

‘Journeying With Jesus’ is a Bible plan to help us walk with Jesus through the last two chapters of Matthew. We stop to focus on Jesus' last days on this earth and what that means to us. How does that change who I am and Whose I am today? We will take time to dwell on Scripture and “bring it home” with questions that make us consider where we are on the journey of knowing Jesus.
