The Power To Be: How To Be Still Through T-E-A-R-S

DAY 4 OF 5

How to be still through T-E-A-R-S

R – REMEMBER God’s Track Record

When we’re stuck in the vise grip of life and feeling intense pressure, we have a tendency to forget about anything except our current circumstances. The pain, the fear, the burdens, the weariness, the worry, or whatever becomes foremost in our minds. Even the Bible greats had problems with this. Take Moses, for example.

Moses knew God intimately and was called God’s friend. He had seen God work in one supernatural way after another. He experienced God at the burning bush and was there when God opened the Red Sea for the multitude to cross on dry ground. He saw the cloud that led the people by day and the pillar of fire that led them by night. He met with God on the mountain and received the commandments. He took in God’s marvelous provision of manna and so much more.

Then something strange happened. I won’t go into all the details, but Numbers 11 tells about how the people got so sick of manna that they grumbled and wailed and complained to Moses. God became exceedingly angry with the Israelites because of their ungrateful behavior.

A troubled Moses—frustrated, exhausted, and weighed down beyond what he could bear—didn’t hold anything back as he talked with God about the situation. God promised Moses that he’d send meat. Lots and lots of meat. So much meat that they’d eat and eat and eat until it came out their nostrils and they’d loathe it.

Now, here’s the part that caught me by surprise. Moses doubted God’s ability and disputed his promise. He asked, “How is that possible?”

God responded with, “When did I become weak?”

Isn’t it amazing God had to ask that question?

Moses’ forgetting God’s track record seems unbelievable to me. Yet we can be the same way when we’re mentally and physically drained, feeling defeated, or in an uncomfortable spot.

The lesson I get out of this is that HOW something is going to happen isn’t important, but the WHO we’re coming to with our problems is. If we remember who God is and the supernatural power he has, we can bring our impossible-looking circumstances to him without questioning how. Our job is to trust that he is able.

When we remember what God has done for us in the past, we can trust him for today and tomorrow.
