Devotions for the Hungry Heart

DAY 6 OF 6

Title: A Hungry Heart is Sharing

Devotional Content:

I have a theory and a disclaimer. The disclaimer first: my theory isn’t doctrinal, and you won’t find it anywhere in scripture, so don’t go looking. Actually, it’s not even a theory. That sounds like something I’d need to prove. This is more of a notion, but I’m fond of it, and quite naturally that makes me want to share it with y’all.

I think the time is coming when I will get to lay my eyes on every wonder of creation in this whole wide world. From Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, from the Angel Falls of Venezuela, to the Dead Sea of the Jordan, from the Amazon in South America, to the Underground River of the Philippines, I’m thinking I’ll get to see them all in a land called eternity. Oh, yes, I knew you’d need a bit more explanation, and I’m happy to oblige.

As I study God’s Word, I find myself struck more and more by His tendency to speak in types and shadows. The Bible is full of references to things on earth that mimic things in heaven. So consider this: what if everything we see is only an imitation of a heavenly model we will one day behold? What if, right? The thought will take your breath away if you let it.

Again, I’m not teaching a new doctrine, folks, just giving you a peek into my recent thinking. I wanted to mention it because of what the theory has done for me. In short, it’s encouraged me to swap the idea of a bucket list, an itemized dream of what I’d like to do before I leave this world, for a record of who I’d like to take with me into the next. My new bucket list now reads with line items like, “Let the love of Jesus be so fully expressed through my life that others are drawn to Him like moths to a flame!” How about that? Let’s all put people on our bucket lists. It could be that we’ll get to see those Angel Falls together!

“Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” MATTHEW 5:16

Was this plan helpful? We adapted it from the book Devotions For The Hungry Heart by Shellie Rushing Tomlinson.

Day 5

About this Plan

Devotions for the Hungry Heart

God promises to satisfy those who hunger for Him. Sadly, we often prefer magazines and me time. Can we really learn to feast our hungry selves on the eternal when the temporal is so demanding? Shellie Rushing Tomlinson says we can. She’s here with Devotions For The Hungry Heart, simple stories, grounded in Scripture and framed around six God honoring traits to walk readers into an ever-increasing appetite for Jesus.
