Redefining Success

The author of the letter to the Romans urged his listeners to reject definitions of success that don’t match God’s values.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2).

When he started Dayspring Technologies, CEO Chi-Ming Chien felt the clash between his Christian faith and external definitions of success.

“We live in a milieu that’s 24/7, always on, faster is better,” says Chien. But, “God has made us to have rest.”

Using a renewed definition of success based on the values in the Bible, Chien bucked the trend by ensuring rest for everyone in his company. His strategy involves “not over-promising,” and “declining work if it doesn’t fit the schedule,” Chien says.

Whether or not you work for a Christian-driven company, you can renew your definition of success by comparing it against the Bible and your understanding of God’s will.

Are you succeeding at what is good in God’s eyes?

Prayer: God, help me define success as you would have me see it. Be with me in my work today. Amen.
