Benedetto l’uomo che confida nel SIGNORE e la cui fiducia è il SIGNORE! Egli è come un albero piantato vicino all’acqua, che distende le sue radici lungo il fiume: non si accorge quando viene la calura e il suo fogliame rimane verde; nell’anno della siccità non è in affanno e non cessa di portare frutto». Il cuore è ingannevole più di ogni altra cosa e insanabilmente maligno; chi potrà conoscerlo? «Io, il SIGNORE, che investigo il cuore, che metto alla prova le reni, per retribuire ciascuno secondo le sue vie, secondo il frutto delle sue azioni».

Ma io benedico chi ha fiducia in me e cerca in me la sua sicurezza. Egli sarà come un albero trapiantato vicino a un fiume che stende le sue radici fino all’acqua. Non dovrà temere quando viene il caldo, perché le sue foglie resteranno verdi. Neppure un anno di siccità gli farà danno: continuerà a produrre i suoi frutti. Il cuore dell'uomo inganna più di ogni altra cosa: è incorreggibile. Chi può comprenderlo? Ma io, il Signore, scruto i sentimenti e i pensieri segreti dell'uomo. Così posso trattare ciascuno secondo la sua condotta in base al risultato delle sue azioni».

Egli sarà come un albero piantato presso alle acque, e che stende le sue radici lungo un ruscello; e quando viene l'arsura, egli non la sente; anzi le sue fronde verdeggiano; e nell'anno della secchezza non se ne affanna, e non resta di far frutto. Il cuor dell'uomo è frodolente sopra ogni altra cosa, ed insanabile; chi lo conoscerà? Io, il Signore, che investigo i cuori, che provo le reni; e ciò, per rendere a ciascuno la retribuzione secondo le sue vie, secondo il frutto de' suoi fatti.
