14 Days To Live

DAY 11 OF 14

Jesus is the greatest prayer

Devotional

John 17 is a passage that should be read over and over again. It’s not any truer than the rest of the Bible, but it is unique in the amount of information it communicates about God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

After reading this passage a few times, consider its revelations:

  • Jesus is God (v. 1)
  • Jesus had authority over everything (v. 2)
  • Jesus desires to glorify God (v. 4-5)
  • Jesus prays for His people – for unity, truth, sanctification and love (v. 9, 20-26)

Now consider our prayers. Aunt Velma’s hip, a new job, financial security. All are valid requests. But, how does Jesus pray for us? Our prayers differ in size, shape, scope and desire. C.S. Lewis gave us a masterful illustration of the human view of glory:

“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.” (C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory)

Oh, Jesus, may we have your heart and passion for the goodness of Your Glory.

Pray

Thank you Jesus for praying for me. Do not ever let me forget there is nothing more important than Your glory. Please protect me from the evil one and make me more like You everyday. Please guide me to pray as I pray for others.

About this Plan

14 Days To Live

Step into the Gospel of John and read through the influence and impact Jesus had the two weeks preceding His death. Once you experience God’s truth, you will never look at life the same – for Jesus is greater than any fear that grips your life or joy that fills your heart.
