Cause and Effect
Commandments, commands, reverence for and the laws of the Lord - what are those things? Are they still happening these days? Frankly speaking, they may not be the things I'm looking for today. However, these things are most likely the ones I will enjoy finding: joy to the heart; insight for living, something that is lasting, and fairness.
In our lives these days, it is so easy to overlook the principle of cause and effect. For example, I need to eat healthy food and do sport (the cause) in order to become healthy (the effect). Or, I need to save, invest and budget my money (the cause) so as to gain financial margin (the effect). What happens is that we take entertainment in entitlement, that we deserve the "effects" and that we don't have to do the "cause".
Let me tell you a secret: entitlement is not working. Without us knowing, the cause and effect is the one working. Even in the probable things, somebody else is doing the cause, so that you can enjoy the effect. Take for example a financial matter, there might be someone doing the hard work of saving and investing so that you can enjoy the margin (a classic example is parents and children). In our life though, Jesus died for our sins (the cause) so that we have the opportunity to receive salvation for our soul (the effect).
Today's reading (Psalm 19:8-10) gives us the keys to what we want as the effects.
You want joy? You want insight for living? You want something that is lasting and fair? Then you will want to consider knowing the commandments of the Lord - its rightfulness, its clarity, its purity and its truth. They will produce all the effects that you really want as human beings.
Apostle Paul in Galatians 6:7-9 puts it this way, that you "don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant." King David who wrote this Psalm, puts it this way, you will find doing the causes (commands of the LORD) bring about the effects similar to the value of gold and the taste of honey.
You can choose better today. Enjoy living the rightful effects from doing the rightful causes.
Whoever finds God, finds life.
