DAY 18: LEAVING A SPIRITUAL LEGACY
Key verse: "…but as a memorial. It will remind our descendants and your descendants that we, too, have the right to worship the Lord at his sanctuary with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and peace offerings. Then your descendants will not be able to say to ours, ‘You have no claim to the Lord.’ If they say this, our descendants can reply, ‘Look at this copy of the Lord’s altar that our ancestors made. It is not for burnt offerings or sacrifices; it is a reminder of the relationship both of us have with the Lord.’ “- Joshua 22:27-28
In Joshua 22:27-28, the eastern tribes of Israel explain that the altar they built was to serve as a witness between them and the other tribes. It was a reminder for future generations that all of Israel worshipped God and belonged to His covenant, even though they lived on different sides of the Jordan. This altar represented unity and shared faith, ensuring no one felt disconnected from God’s promises.
God’s plan spans generations. In Joshua 22, we’re reminded that God establishes His covenant not just with us, but with our children and beyond. Our faith journeys shape future generations, influencing their view of who God is and what He can do.
One of the best ways we can leave a spiritual legacy is by sharing stories of God’s goodness. When we recount God’s provision and guidance, we help the next generation recognize His hand at work and inspire them to trust Him.
Our actions, attitudes, and priorities also set a powerful example. Children and disciples alike follow the examples they see. Living out our faith with authenticity, love, and integrity will inspire others to do the same. We’re also called to equip the next generation to go further than we have by discipling, teaching, and encouraging them to seek their own encounters with God.
We, too, can leave a spiritual legacy by encouraging others with testimonies of what God has done. Think of something that God has done in your life this week or month and share it with someone today. Let our testimonies glorify God and fuel the faith of others!
Response
What steps can you take to create a lasting spiritual legacy, whether by sharing your testimony, living out your faith, or investing in the next generation’s walk with God?
About this Plan
In this 21-day devotional, Commissioned, we’ll explore how God called Joshua to lead His people into the Promised Land—and how He’s calling each of us to step into our own mission. Just like Joshua, we are commissioned by God to advance His purposes, no matter where we are. Over these next 21 days, you’ll be challenged to walk in faith, courage, and obedience, knowing that God goes before you, equips you, and strengthens you for every battle ahead. Prepare to reflect on your calling and the impact God wants to make through your life.
