Living in Increase (Part 1) - Increase in Understanding

DAY 23 OF 28

The Foundation of Wisdom

Psalm 111:10 tells us that the fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Now, if you’re anything like me, you probably have questions when you see the words “fear” and “Lord” in the same sentence. Isn’t God supposed to deliver us from our fears? Isn’t God supposed to provide us with peace? Then why should we be afraid of Him?

In the original language, the word “fear” in Psalm 111:10 is yir’â, which means “respect” or “reverence” (Blue Letter Bible). When we fear the Lord, we don’t despise or run away from Him. When we fear the Lord, we respect and honor Him. This respect and honor lead us not to disobey or act out against Him. This fear would be the same honor and respect a child may have for his parents. He does not want to cause them trouble or dismay, so he is obedient and respectful because he cares about them.

Our fear of the Lord, our honor and reverence for Him, is the foundation of wisdom (Psalm 111:10; Proverbs 9:10). This is because our fear of the Lord leads to dependence on God. We realize He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords (1 Timothy 6:15), and we cannot do life alone! We understand that His way is better (Isaiah 55:8-9), so we follow His commands, which help us grow in wisdom (Psalm 111:10). However, before we can build anything, we must have a firm foundation. Later this week, we will discuss growing and increasing in wisdom, but today, know this: Without the fear of the Lord, we will never be wise. Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom (Psalm 111:10), and we will only increase in that wisdom and understanding when we have a firm foundation of who God is and what He has done for us.
