Light of the WorldSýnishorn
The Light of the World shines forth from the dawn of Creation to the End of Days. From the vast cosmic chaos of the beginning of time to the one bright and shining Star of Bethlehem, God in his vast love for us has made a way. He made a way for us to clearly see and follow one light, one way, one truth. Jesus. Join us on the YouVersion Bible App for our study, “The Light of the World,” as we view moments when the light of revelation shone for the shepherds, the wise men, and many others, one by one. Just as God has shone a revelation of Jesus to each of them, He reveals Himself to us as well, one by one.
Did you know that the closest star to our solar system, Proxima Centauri, is 4.2 light years away? Four light years seems close, doesn’t it? But 4.2 light years is equal to 77,000 years. Even the closest star (besides our sun) is beyond our imagination, and ability, to reach.
Today’s first passage paints in broad brush strokes a vast, mysterious expanse that is simply impossible to fathom. Each time God speaks in Genesis 1, a miracle happens, and Creation becomes more clear. When He said, “Let there be light,” light appeared, God saw that it was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. Day One.
The further we go in this passage, we watch God bring into order this beautiful, chaotic cosmic soup that He created. We read how God created the lights in the heavens (the sun, moon, and stars) “to rule the day and night and for signs and seasons,” like the sign in the sky that the Magi correctly interpreted that a King was born.
In the next chapter, God made a beautiful garden here, Eden, and placed a man and a woman there who walked in innocence with God all day every day. Until they didn’t. And their world came crashing down because of deception and rebellion, and a different kind of darkness covered the face of the earth.
As Adam and Eve chose disobedience that gave darkness permission to enter and control them, in our inherited darkness, we have also chosen—and some of us continue to choose—disobedience. We resist God and stiff-arm Him and keep trying to do things our own way, but it doesn’t work, and we just make a mess of everything we touch.
But in His love for us, He promised a way, and He made a way:
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.” | Isaiah 9:2
From the vast cosmic chaos of the beginning of time to the one bright and shining Star of Bethlehem, God in his vast love for us has made a way. He made a way for us to clearly see and follow one light, one way, one truth. Jesus.
“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” | John 8:12
Application:
Jesus, please forgive me for putting myself on the throne of my heart. I choose today to fully surrender to You. I release control of my plans, my will, my desires, and even my freedom to You. I choose today to serve You and You alone, for your honor and glory in my life.
Questions:
When you see Him shining His light for you and leading you today, will you follow it? When you hear His voice today, will you obey Him?
