Goodness of God

DAY 2 OF 7

Pause and ponder

When presented with today’s topic for our devotion, my mind immediately flew to the multitude of scriptures, stories, anthems and experiences I’ve had throughout my life pointing to the goodness of God. No greater expression of the goodness of God could be other than Christ on the cross dying for the sins of mankind. In 2 Corinthians 5:19a (TLB) we read, ‘For God was in Christ, restoring the world to Himself, no longer counting men’s sins against them but blotting them out’.

And so I was ready to sail forth with a headful and a heartful of ‘goodness of God’ themes. And then I stopped to ask myself the question, ‘Why should God be good?’ It’s an interesting and valid question. If God is God, He doesn’t have to be good. He doesn’t have to, because He is God. He stands alone not having to conform to our idea of who He is. And we, not being God, would not be able to question either His nature or His character.

Through the Bible, God reveals Himself to us as awesome, and glorious and righteous. He reveals that He is God, and that He is good.

I hope you stopped like I did. Just for a minute. This minute punctuates our headlong daily pursuits to stop and say, ‘Today, Lord, I acknowledge that you are God and that you are good. Open my eyes to see all these aspects of Your true nature.’
