Free to try something new

They were fishermen of fish.
They became fishers of people.

In some ways, it’s the same…
And yet entirely different.

New.

Jesus called His followers, and with that, they stepped into a new future. They were free – and Rabbi Jesus provided. It wasn’t always easy, but it gave them ultimate fulfillment.

Free.

They had to let go of certain things. They left their nets and boats behind, and their way of life would truly be different. They would live a traveling life - always on the road.

Are you free?

When I look around, I see 10,000 examples of people who aren’t free.
What would Jesus’ invitation be to them?

When I look around, I also see 10,000 examples of free people. They’ve left their ‘nets’ and ‘boats’ behind and live fully for Jesus.

Which group do you belong to?

How can you be free? Through the truth.

Who is the truth? Or what is the truth? The short answer: Jesus. He speaks the truth. He is the truth.

And what does He do? He sets people free. “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life.” That person is free. That person truly lives.

In this episode of The Chosen, you see Zebedee doing something completely new. He sells his boat and buys an olive grove. What a beautiful story! With the proceeds, he wants to contribute to the Kingdom. What a wonderful motive!

To his surprised sons, he says something along the lines of, “We’ve waited all this time for the Messiah, and now He’s here! I've met Him. And you get to follow Him!” And then: “I’m free to try something new too.” And off he goes, ready to buy an olive grove. A beautiful example!

• Jesus sets you free with a purpose. What will you do with the freedom you’ve received?

Prayer: “Lord Jesus, in Luke 4, You say that You came to bring freedom to the captives. Freedom. Lord, I want to walk in that too. Will You show me today how I may serve You in freedom? Lord, 1,000 times thank You for what You have done for me. Amen.”
