DAY 20 OF 25

The Story of Simeon

Luke’s account of Christ’s birth gives us one of the most tender scenes in Scripture between Simeon and the newborn King. Simeon’s name, which means “to hear intelligently,” provides powerful context on the posture of his heart.

Simeon’s age is not revealed, but Scripture tells us that this man of great faith was promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Savior. We don’t know how many years Simeon prayed, but we can imagine how overjoyed he was to enter the temple, at the Holy Spirit’s prompting, to find baby Jesus with Mary and Joseph. Not only did he lay eyes on the baby, but he was also able to receive him and say a prayer of gratitude. The prophesy of salvation was fulfilled through this miraculous birth, and Simeon knew the deliverance of Israel was not an event, it was the very personhood of Jesus.

We can struggle to hear God for many reasons, but Simeon is our example of how to hear and listen to Holy Spirit.

Reflect

Reflect on if/how you’ve heard the Holy Spirit speak to you. What was it like? How can you be more in tune to the Holy Spirit like Simeon?

Pray

Lord, give us ears to hear You and a heart full of faith to follow what You say. Our hope is in you! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
