DAY 3 OF 5

BOLDLY WAIT ON GOD

Though David was anointed king as a young man, it’s likely that he had to wait another ten to fifteen years before actually becoming king. In the meantime, he returned to the fields where he looked after sheep. Surely, he had moments when he felt frustrated that life wasn’t moving as he thought it would. But those years were significant to his purpose!

If David had never fought off a lion or a bear, he may never have had the confidence in God to defeat a giant (1 Samuel 17:34–36). For people to realize there was something special about David, he had to tend the sheep before he could step into the palace.

Sometimes we’re like David, frustrated about where we’re at in life and wondering about our purpose. Perhaps you think you don’t have a purpose because you’re in a season that seems to have nothing to do with what you feel like you’ve been called to do.

I’ve been in that season before. Midway through college I returned home to Georgia, where I became a manager at a video warehouse store for two years. I felt a calling on my life for leading worship, and many times I wondered why God had me working at a place where people came to rent movies. I couldn’t have imagined that I needed this season of management so that I would one day be able to pastor a church with my husband.

My job—my identity—at that video warehouse didn’t seem to line up with what I was called to do. But it was all on purpose for my purpose!

We all carry things like that in our lives. Ideas. Goals. Desires. Things that seem to take forever. Hopes that sometimes never seem to be fulfilled. We ask God, What are You trying to teach me? This doesn’t feel like what You promised me.

Still, we must trust God’s timing. As Galatians 6:9 says, “So let’s not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up, or quit.”

Dear Holy God, help me be content in the season I’m in right now. Reveal what You want in my life and help me know that You are always in control of everything, big and small. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Are you feeling tired or anxious today? This 5-day devotional reminds us that sitting at the feet of Jesus gives us the energy and focus we need to move forward in hope. Sitting at Jesus’ feet is not just about listening for His Word. It’s about worshipping Him. It’s about talking with Him. It’s about believing that He will give us boldness and courage to follow His call.
