Step in to God's Promise

DAY 1 OF 3

We’ve all had those moments when we sense God drawing us to do something new, respond differently or trust Him for something more. Over the next three days we’ll reflect on God’s promises and the importance of putting our faith into action. God wants us to believe in Him, but belief alone is not enough to actually propel us forward. He also expects us to step out in obedience to claim His promises.

In Joshua 1: 1-9, we see Joshua standing on the brink of promise. In fact, I can picture Joshua standing on the banks of the Jordan River peering out over the land on the other side. God had promised that land to the Israelites. In fact, it had been “just over there” for 40 years.

In this scripture passage God installs Joshua as the new leader of the Israelites after 40 years under Moses’s leadership. At this time, we can estimate that the Israelites numbered close to two million people; most of whom had only known Moses as their leader.

God gives Joshua a host of promises; all of which rested, on the other side of the Jordan River. This river had kept the people separated from the Promised Land for forty years. Now, it was at flood stage, which means it was wider, deeper and more dangerous than usual. Still, it was at this moment that God tells Joshua to step in.

Undoubtedly, this was a “step in & step up” moment for Joshua. And, it presented him with a crisis of faith…would he put feet to his faith? We’ve all got moments like this, when we know things are about to change in a big way! God’s promises will always call us to step out, even when the reality of what we see doesn't seem to match what God is asking us to do.

I hope you believe that God keeps His promises. But often, the crisis comes not from our belief, but from our unwillingness to act upon it…to actually put feet to our faith.

Reflection:

  1. In what ways is God calling you to step out in faith?
  2. How can you discern God's voice in your life?
  3. What promises from God can you hold onto?
  4. What action steps do you need to take to put feet to the promises God has for you?

Prayer:

Thank you, God, for your promises. Help me to recognize your voice. Would you strengthen me and increase my belief? Give me clarity to see the next step and the boldness to take it.
