Daily Bible Reading— October 2024, God’s Guiding Word: Justice and Peace

DAY 26 OF 31

October 26

Introduction

Amos 4:1–13: Today’s reading begins with a sharp indictment against the luxurious lifestyle of the people of Samaria, with particular attention on the ruthless women of the city. The prophet calls out Israel’s inability to learn from the punishments God had already sent.

Today’s Key Verse: Amos 4:13

God is the one who made the mountains and created the winds. He makes his thoughts known to people; he changes day into night. He walks on the heights on the earth. This is his name: the LORD God Almighty!

Reflect

The opening verses contain harsh imagery, highlighting the ways the rich and powerful ignore and mistreat the needy. Verse 2 refers to the impending Assyrian invasion of Israel (722 B.C.) when the captives would be led away with hooks through their noses. a way in which bulls are led. In verses 6–12, of what does God remind the people? In what ways do these verses point to an inability to learn from the past?

Pray

Lord God, open my heart and my mind to your teachings. Remind me of your mighty deeds, make your thoughts known to me, and help me to obey your commands. You are the LORD God Almighty, and holy is your name. Amen.

Tomorrow’s Reading

Amos 5:1–27: The prophet teaches what the LORD demands.
