The Purpose of Christmas

DAY 14 OF 15

Most of the Psalms are written as songs or poetry. In other words, they’re essentially the deepest expressions of our deepest feelings. The writers of the psalms held nothing back. They wrote about their worries, they wrote about their fears, they wrote about their worst days. And of course, they also wrote about their joys, they wrote about their freedom, they wrote about their best days. Why? Because they knew that God has given them the freedom to express anything and everything to Him.

God’s love made a way to save us from our sins, but it also made a way for us to step into the freedom available to us. It made a way for us to live freely here on earth and to live freely with God in Heaven for eternity. It’s that lasting act of love that we celebrate and remember every year at Christmas. It’s a love we can see on display in our lives, in our relationships, and in the world around us. And it’s a love that we can be thankful for in this season and beyond.

Today, talk with someone in your life about God’s love. Ask them to share how they’ve seen God’s love at work in their own life recently. Then, share how you’ve seen God’s love at work in your life too.Be honest with each other, and then, be honest with God. Take a tip from the psalmists and speak freely with the God who loves you.

About this Plan

The Purpose of Christmas

With all that noise telling us what Christmas should be about, it can be difficult to get to the point—to the heart of Christmas. That’s why, in this devotional, we’ll work to cut through the noise and discover the real meaning behind the season. We’ll look at what brings real joy and purpose in this holiday. We’ll unpack the incredible story behind the birth of Jesus Himself to understand what the purpose of Christmas really is.
