Proverbs: The Art of Wise LivingSýnishorn
The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. — Proverbs 12:18
Reflection: Every time you speak, you are faced with a choice.
In this chapter, you’ll notice that the language around our words and speech is often paired with verbs we’d typically see associated with actions. Our key verse is one of those examples: “The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing” (emphasis added).
We might think of words as separate from actions, but if you think back to the last argument you had, the opposite is true. A carefully placed word or one recklessly spoken has just as much impact on a relationship as a physical action of love or hurt.
Verse 6 is a good example: “The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood, but the speech of the upright rescues them” (emphasis added). What you say can mean the difference between life and death. And as Proverbs 15:1 indicates, others’ emotions are held in the balance.
Words take on a life of their own — once we speak or write them, we can’t control what happens to them or where they go from there. You can control how you say something, but you cannot control how people receive your words. That’s why it’s so vital to speak with love and patience.
Jesus is the perfect example of the importance of our words. His parables carried so much truth and love, and while they did offend people at times, it wasn’t to purposely hurt them.
So how do you release your words into the world? Do you prepare them carefully for flight as you would prepare to release a butterfly after it’s emerged from its chrysalis? Or would you throw your words like baseballs, aimed at someone who might not be ready to catch them?
And when it comes to other people’s words, are you always in defense mode, or are you open to receiving what other people might have to say, even if it’s not what you want to hear?
Prayer: Lord, help me carefully and honestly select the words I use, and let them be a beacon of light and a safe place rather than weapons that cause hurt or pain. Equip me with strength, guidance, and peace to do Your work well. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
