Single Sister, You MatterSýnishorn
Mary Magdalene
I grew up in a family of talented storytellers, orators, and communicators. My grandmother was a preacher and intercessor who travelled locally and internationally, sharing the word of God and praying for those who needed a touch of love and kindness. If I could think of what my grandmother would say to us single sisters today, it would be: “Single woman, speak! - You carry a valuable message deep within you that is worth sharing.”
Today, we learn from the life of Mary Magdalene. A single woman with a dark past, she was chosen to be the first person to discover that Christ’s tomb was empty. What an honour! God could’ve chosen anyone—one of the male disciples, a Roman soldier, a Pharisee, anyone! But He chose her and commissioned her to declare the news of his resurrection to everyone. From this, I am encouraged to be a student of Christ, and He will reveal himself (and ultimately the Father) to us.
I truly believe that single women each carry a unique gift, calling, message, talent, etc., which is meant to be shared with their communities, maybe even the world. Never allow your singleness to rob you (or rob others) of the calling placed on your life. Speak, be strong and courageous, for your Lord God is surely with you. Remain at his feet as a student, keep searching for ways to serve Him, and remain by His side. Be near so that He can reveal Himself to you and when He calls upon you by name, you will recognise His voice.
From what I know, there is no record of Mary Magdalene ever getting married. Happily, ever after doesn’t always mean marriage. That may be discouraging for some to hear. I, at times, grapple with this perspective too. However, I do believe, in the depths of my heart, that if God has called us to a life of singleness, He will give us the strength and the grace to be okay with it, to live with contentment and still create a meaningful life full of adventure. You can have a story that echoes the grace of Christ and brings joy to many even as a single woman. Take heart, dear single sister, and speak up!
