Godly Masculinity - Wisdom for Young Men

DAY 6 OF 6

Introduction

We all know that we cannot live a life of isolation. So, we know that we must have friends or acquaintances. But in so many cases we do not see the danger: I can surround myself with bad company.

This is one of the biggest challenges, especially for godly young men. Once I have accepted Jesus in my life, what do I do with old friends and relationships?

Bad company

In 1 Cor. 15:33 we see that bad company corrupts good character. This verse must be read for what it is: it is not saying that it "can" corrupt good character, it states that is "does" corrupt good character.

As part of a repentant life, we must turn our backs on our old sinful life, and this may include breaking ties with ungodly people. As we have already seen in 1 Pet 1:14-16, we are called to a life of holiness and bad relationships.

Surround yourself with other God-fearing men, who can inspire you, encourage you and keep you accountable.

What does it mean?

  • If a friendship is going to let you end up in hell, end it. In a worst-case scenario, it is better to go through life alone, than to end up in hell with a bunch of friends that did nothing but to pull you down with them.
  • Find other men that are serious about their relationship with God. You will know them by characteristics like commitment, devotion, and openly bearing the fruits of the Spirit. For such men obedience to God is nonnegotiable. Surround yourself with such men.
  • Watch out for fake "wannabies" - people that only resemble godly men but lack the heart and character. You will know them from a lack of commitment, excuses, etc.
  • Find yourself a good spiritual mentor. You can look for them among the elders of your church. If you cannot find someone like this in your church, look for a man that is known to serve God by people outside of the church.
