What Matters Most (The Book of 2 Timothy)

DAY 8 OF 20

REFLECT

A sudden burst of light flew into the room from nowhere and the sound of the “boom” loomed larger than life. Gwen Smith, worship leader, author, and writer for Girlfriends in God, ran from her home with her husband, Brad, and their two children. Lightning had struck and in seconds, their entire home was ablaze. Daily life shifted drastically, and their family became displaced for 6 months. Gwen’s words reflect their true feelings, “Ultimately, we thank God that we are all safe, and the rest is replaceable.”

Realizing God’s protection over them, their family experienced a renewed focus on what really matters.

In the verses listed above for day 8, Paul encourages Timothy that through suffering, the only thing that matters is the truth, specifically God’s Word. Jesus suffered crucifixion and even death, but without it, there could not have been a resurrection. Though Paul was bound in chains, he took great consolation in the fact that God’s Word could never be chained and encouraged Timothy to persevere through anything.

Tragedies happen, circumstances turn wrong, and in this world, suffering is prevalent. But God’s promises, His Word, never fail. He cannot deny His Word; he is faithful to keep His Word, even when we are not.

PRAY

God, suffering is hard for me to understand. Thank you for sending Jesus to suffer on the cross for me and thank you that He lives again! May Your Word be my constant light through grief and pain. Amen.
