Jesus arrived on Earth at a time in history when the culture elevated honor above all else. Even more than that, honor was reserved mostly for adult men. So you can imagine the surprise of the disciples, the other people gathered around to hear Jesus teach, and maybe even the children themselves when they heard Jesus respond to them in a way that welcomed, invited, honored, and elevated children. While it disrupted the way things had always been done, those who had stayed close to Jesus for long would have already seen that this was just who Jesus was.
From the very beginning, Jesus was upending the status quo and disrupting the systems that made certain groups of people less than others, including kids. Think through the groups of people in our current time and place that may be thought of as less than. Who are the people we write off or disregard in our culture? What about us as individuals? Who are we more likely to look over, look past, or look through?
What would it look like to see others as Jesus did—from the stranger we pass on the street to our very own family members? This week, make an effort to do just that!
