DAY 2 OF 5

A Response From Travis Kelce’s Brother

Tight end, Travis Kelce made a major contribution to Kansas City’s win in Super Bowl LVIII, hauling nine catches for 93 yards.

Even though he played well in the second half, Kelce was frustrated by his team’s first-half performance. Kelce ended up grabbing and yelling at head coach, Andy Reid, following a critical mistake by the Chiefs.

Some people made excuses for Kelce, justifying why he would react that way, and Andy Reid showed him grace with some kind words during his postgame press conference.

But of all the responses to Kelce’s emotional confrontation, one worth unpacking came from Travis’ brother, Jason Kelce on their podcast. Jason said, “You crossed the line. I think we can both agree on that. Let’s be honest, the yelling in his face, too, is over the top. I think there are better ways to handle this, retrospectively.”

Thankfully, they have a close relationship that allows Jason to willingly call his brother out instead of justifying it. Likewise, having people in our corner willing to tell us, “I think there are better ways to handle this” is important.

As followers of Jesus, we need relationships with people built on love and trust. They need to help us identify our sins and walk with us in repentance. We can also do the same for them since it’s not about being judgmental but kindly pushing each other toward spiritual maturity.

Hebrews 3:13 gives us this powerful challenge: “You must warn each other every day, while it is still ‘today,’ so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God.”

Let’s be encouraged to embrace authentic relationships and listen to those we love and trust when they call us out for sin and offer us Biblical advice.

Let's live out Proverbs 12:15: “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.”

I’m Bryce Johnson, and you can UNPACK that!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I pray that in humility I willingly invite people into my life who speak the truth in love. I pray that You’ll empower the people I trust to point out the sins in my life and that I willingly listen. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
