Day 3: Family Application
You weren’t meant to do life alone.
Imagine a family where every member is chasing individual dreams without much thought for others. God wants so much more for us. He desires for us a shared life beyond just sharing space. Without understanding who you are as a family, decisions become a battleground. For example, one parent wants to move for a job, while the other values raising kids in their small and quiet hometown. This lack of direction leads to tension and frustration—it can feel like a tug-o-war within our homes.
We’ve talked a lot about the principle of Application, both from an individual and family perspective. So, what’s the difference between a family that applies their Identity, Purpose, and Direction in life, and a family that doesn’t?
When a family lives out these principles, amazing things happen. Inside their home, they have a strong sense of community, and while they may still be exploring and discovering their identity and purpose, it’s through their family’s shared identity and purpose that they learn to uncover their own. This is why it’s so important to center our homes around faith in God—He’s the only one that can show us who we are and give us the insight on why we exist, and where we’re going in life. No one is meant to do life alone! God wasn’t even alone when He created the universe—which means, the construct of a family unit isn’t by accident! God will use our small community of parents, brothers, and sisters to help shape us into who we’re destined to become. Now, whether their shaping positively or negatively impacts individuals, it can go either way. That’s why it’s so important for the family’s identity to be planted deeply in faith in God. Defining your family’s core values, and taking the time to discuss and write down your shared mission statement helps family members understand where they come from and why their life matters. And once you know the “Who” and “Why” about yourself, then you’ll know where it is you’re supposed to go—that’s where your vision statement comes in!
Think of your family as a team of intentional architects—you all recognize and know deep within that God brought you together for a special purpose. Each of your family members plays a crucial role in contributing to that special purpose, creating a strong sense of responsibility and support for one another. This approach significantly increases the chances of achieving your family goals and establishes a positive atmosphere at home. When challenges arise, your shared purpose serves as your safety belt on the theme park ride by keeping you connected and reminding you of your family's mission.
Now, let's talk about practical application—these are the everyday actions that align with your family's identity, purpose, and direction. To get started, begin talking about your shared values and setting SMART goals together. I want you to think of your family's Core Values, Mission Statement, and Vision Statement as guiding tools that not only help shape who you are, your purpose, and the direction you're headed, but they also keep you on the track and safe from external distractions…and ditches.
Once you've tackled some distractions and sidestepped a few potential pitfalls, it's time to celebrate—together. While there's always work on the horizon, life isn't just about grinding. You and your family might be experts at planting and watering, but it's equally important to master the art of harvesting and celebrating the fruits of your labor. Whether it's a monumental triumph or a small victory, take a moment to acknowledge each win, offer gratitude to God, and celebrate as a family. Witnessing others win inspires something within us to want to win too. Don't let the hustle for tomorrow’s tasks rob you of enjoying the blessings that God has given you today. Celebration is more than just a party; it reinforces the distinct role each family member plays within your treasured family.
As you keep growing, get imaginative about working your family values into your daily routines and transforming them into actions that genuinely reflect your shared purpose. And, of course, never forget the power of prayer—individually, as a family, and for each other. By living out these practices, your family can discover and implement realistic ways to apply your shared identity, purpose, and direction into your daily lives. As your family walks this journey, celebrating wins and living out Family Identity, Purpose, and Direction, you're authoring a powerful story with God. Through prayer and intentional living, you're creating a meaningful and lasting impact. Keep planting, watering, and enjoying the harvest—your family's story is unfolding beautifully.
