Rediscovering Purpose as a Public Servant

DAY 2 OF 4

Romans 12:6-8 says:

“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.” (NIV)

Some individuals are not meant to work as public servants. God has endowed each one of us with unique gifts and abilities that enable us to serve in the manner He intended. For instance, my wife is incredibly intelligent and has a talent for working with technology. This is where God called her to serve. However, if she was asked to armor up and climb into a squad car to respond to an active shooter, she simply could not. She was not created to do so. We were. We are the protectors and providers in areas many are unable to go.

Without us being willing and able to suit up and hit the streets, climb into turnout gear and run into a burning building, or mount up into an armored vehicle to patrol the streets of a foreign country during war, those who were not created to fight these battles would be at greater risk of oppression.

But these duties take their toll. This is where we MUST lean on the Lord.

In Psalm 119:28, we read:

“My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word.” (NIV)

We must be in the Word of the Lord daily. He is who gives us the strength, peace, wisdom, and perseverance to continue being the light in this dark world. Without it, we stray from why He put us into this profession to begin with.

Take a moment today to ask God to reveal the darkness within your heart. Ask Him to bring to light the things that are holding you back and keeping you from doing His will. The enemy wants to distract you and prevent you from seeing those in need, those who need your light.
