Weird Ideas: Holy Spirit. Holy Church.

DAY 3 OF 5

When teaching about the Holy Spirit, Martin Luther says this: “I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.” (Luther’s Small Catechism).

That’s quite a job description! Anytime we’re inclined to downplay the Holy Spirit, it’s good to remember what He does and how much we depend on Him! It helps to realize that when it comes to my faith and the renewal God is working in me, it’s the Holy Spirit I have to thank.

Today, say a thank-you prayer for the gift of the Holy Spirit, and thank the Holy Spirit for your faith in Christ. Or for any stirring for God that you have. Then, tap one of the ideas Martin Luther mentions above. Which strikes you most today? Lean into the Holy Spirit regarding it.

About this Plan

Weird Ideas: Holy Spirit. Holy Church.

Christians are different. They can’t help it. When you’re in Christ and filled with the Spirit, it changes you. This leads to weird ideas and alternate beliefs about reality. This series of 5-day plans uses classic Christian Creeds as a vehicle to explain the Christian worldview compared to the world’s, and help us see reality through Jesus’s eyes.
