Jesus Christ is the Son of God
“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” (Mark 1:1)
At the beginning of his book, Mark makes a statement that has caused heated debate for centuries. Jesus Christ is not just a prophet, benefactor, or wise teacher - He is the Son of God! Mark puts that as a sort of title above his book. Then, chapter after chapter, Mark tells about Jesus' actions that showed His supernatural power: Jesus healed the sick, cast out demons, and had authority over natural forces. Mark's story also deals with the opposition the Lord Jesus experienced. Many people found the claim that He was God's Son hard to believe. The religious leaders considered this statement so blasphemous that they condemned Jesus to death for it. But the very events surrounding His death revealed His true identity. A Roman commander concluded at the foot of the cross, “Truly, this Man was the Son of God!” (Mark 15:39).
Mark himself was convinced of this truth. It was crucial to him. For other Bible writers, too. For example, the apostle John says, “Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God” (1 John 4:15).
Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God? How much importance do you attach to this truth? And do you think it is important for other people to share your view? What if they don’t?
