Jesus Style Leadership 1 - Call & GraceSýnishorn
Grace and Sin
Leadership Lesson
Jesus-style leaders admit their weakness and brokenness, seek God’s grace and forgiveness, and know God’s victory.
Read 1 John 1:5-10
Comment
By the time he wrote this letter, the Apostle John was a very experienced Christian leader. He had some wise words on sin for leaders: If we keep on displeasing God without stopping, it’s a sign that we don’t really belong to him at all (1:6). A struggle with sin is normal but complete domination by sin shows that we don’t have the light of God in us. On the other hand, if we say that we’ve got it all together and that sin is no longer a problem for us, then we’re fooling ourselves (1:8). Jesus-style leaders are neither dominated by sin nor free of sin. They struggle with sin like everyone else and don’t have to pretend that they’ve got it all together. They admit their failures and mistakes and receive God’s grace. Yet they also find victory over sin through the power of Christ. They are trying to walk in the light and are therefore growing more like Jesus. Don’t let Satan tell you that your sin doesn’t matter. The sin of a leader can impact a lot of people. But don’t let Satan fool you into thinking that your sin is too bad to be forgiven. God is full of grace.
Prayer
Most people think I’m better than I really am. But you know what I’m like Lord. Nothing is hidden from you. You see my struggle with sin. Please help me not to pretend but to be honest with you and appropriately open with those I lead. Once again, I receive your forgiveness and relish your grace that leads me to victory. Keep freeing me from the power of sin.
Personal Reflection
Is there any brokenness in your life that you need to get out into the open? What do you need to receive forgiveness for right now? It’s time to be free through God’s grace.
