It's Christmas - Devotions from Mandisa

DAY 2 OF 5

“Somebody’s Angel”

Christmas. Meant to be about Jesus, right? The word itself means “Christ’s Mass,” or, the Lord’s Supper. The Lord’s Supper commemorates the last meal Jesus had with his disciples before his death. During that last supper, Jesus did more than break the bread and drink the wine; he washed his disciples’ feet. According to John 13:3-5, “Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.”

Jesus, days before his glory would be fully known to his followers, served. He got down on his knees, next to feet that had walked miles in the dust and washed them with his own holy, godly, sinless hands. He did this during the Lord’s Supper, during Christ’s Mass.
What if we followed suit during this Christmas season? What if we put a space between the word and thought of it as Christ’s Mass and did what Jesus did? Serve.

They say this is the best time of the year,
And for most of us, that's probably how it feels.
But what about the ones left alone,
 And all the people hurting.

How could we be Christ’s Mass to them and serve them?

Pain, hurt, suffering, and loss intensify during the holidays. Some turn on the T.V. to try and forget their sadness only to see commercials of happy families around the turkey. Others who roam the streets year-round are reminded of their homelessness as the home becomes the centerpiece of life for a couple of months.

How would Jesus react to these people? We know. We saw it at the Lord’s Supper: He would wash their feet. If the Holy of Holies is not too good to scrape the dirt from between our toes, we are not too good to look outside of ourselves during this season and at those who are more desperate in these weeks than any other weeks. We are not above the stooping and picking up of someone who is alone and without friends. We are not too busy purchasing the items on the six-page long shopping list to provide warmth to a cold body and soul. Jesus was trying to save the entire world, and he managed to find time to serve. During this Christmas season, we probably could, too.
