Holy Spirit Devotional

DAY 11 OF 14

PRAY IN THE HOLY SPIRIT

In Acts 2:3-8, all the believers were meeting together when all of a sudden, a roar like a mighty wind came in and filled the place called the upper room. “They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” One of the first manifestations of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament was the gift of speaking in tongues.

Tongues translates to glōssa in the original Greek, which means “a language not naturally acquired.” Praying in the Spirit [speaking in tongues] can be both a Heavenly language and an earthly one you did not know before (1 Corinthians 13:1). Speaking in tongues is also one of the gifts of the Spirit in 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 and is evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit all throughout the book of Acts. Paul teaches us that as believers we are to pray in the Spirit at all times (Ephesian 6:18)! When we pray in the Spirit, we are praying perfect prayers as we join with the Holy Spirit’s intercession over us (Romans 8:26-28). Praying in the Holy Spirit aligns our prayers with Heaven, which aligns our spirits with the will of the God. We should desire to pray in the Spirit because it is a gift from God (Matthew 7:11)! When you pray in the Holy Spirit, you can hear God's voice speak to you! This is what gives breakthrough!

Benefits of praying in the Spirit:

  1. Tongues build you up (Jude 1:20)
  2. You pray the perfect will of God (Romans 8:26-27)
  3. It is a way to continue to pray without ceasing. When you have run out of words to pray, or don't know what to pray, pray in the Holy Spirit! (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
  4. It strengthens you! (1 Corinthians 14:4)

If you have not received your prayer language yet, ask God for it. God gives good gifts to His children (Matthew 7:11)! As you ask Him, expect that He will give you your prayer language. Tell fear to go and invite the Holy Spirit to come. Start to speak out in faith and let the Holy Spirit take over as you pray in the Holy Spirit! If you have received your prayer language, know that it is a gift from the Lord. Pray even more in the Spirit. Praying in the Spirit will build you up as you pray the perfect will of God!

Prayer: Pray in the Holy Spirit. If you did not receive your prayer language today, keep asking! He gives you good gifts. Tell the Lord you love Him over and over again. Acknowledge His presence and thank Him for coming!
