Christian Parenting

DAY 4 OF 5

Diligent Training

Parenting is a sacred and demanding task that requires diligent training and intentional effort. Fathers, heed the call to bring up your children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Mothers, even in the midst of your many responsibilities at home, prioritize your husband and children above all else. Give them the time and focused attention they deserve.

In a culture heavily influenced by media and peer pressure, parents must assume the responsibility of shaping their children’s values and behaviors. Disciple your children and take the initiative to teach them God’s Word through everyday conversations. Be actively involved in their spiritual growth, instructing them in the truths of the gospel, warning them against the pitfalls of folly, and modeling humility and righteousness. Don’t delegate this duty to others or rely solely on external influences. Time spent with your children is an eternal investment that will far outlive them and their children.

Parenting is not confined to specific moments or activities; it encompasses every aspect of life. It is a continuous process of nurturing and guiding children toward maturity through loving care and spiritual nourishment. The term “discipline” in Ephesians 6:4 implies child training in godliness, going beyond mere punishment. Similarly, the term “instruction” emphasizes the need for loving warnings that point children to a reverential fear of the Lord. As humans with a sinful nature, we must constantly be pointed back to Christ and His grace. It is crucial not to overlook the reality of human depravity. Children naturally lean toward foolishness; without vigilant parenting, they can easily stray from the path of righteousness. By withholding correction and discipline, you would not be showing love but rather hate. The wise and loving application of discipline produces growth, wisdom, and life.

Training a child requires time, consistency, and hard work. It goes beyond mere words; it necessitates demonstrating godly living through your own example. Clearly explain the gospel to your children, helping them understand the gravity of sin and the need for repentance and faith. Foster a love for their growth in wisdom rather than mere outward conformity.

Training your children is a simple yet profoundly serious endeavor. Fully commit yourself to this task, continually seek God’s guidance through prayer, and rely entirely on the wisdom and truth of Scripture. Remember that your role as a parent is to disciple your children toward Christlikeness. With God’s help and grace, raise children whose hearts belong to Him and who walk in His ways, but make sure your heart belongs to Him first.
