Our Daily Bread: We Are Family

DAY 1 OF 7

My Greatest Gift

Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this. -Psalm 37:5 NIV

Even though I (Javier) grew up in a Christian home as the son of a pastor, I experienced a difficult time. I couldn’t find purpose, joy, and peace simultaneously.

I began to feel alone among so many people who loved me. It was then, when I was twenty-six, that I believe God began guiding me to start a family of my own.

It seemed like every time I went to church, a song was sung that proclaimed we were trusting in God for the salvation of our families and city.

I was filled with tears and emotion for that request. I too trusted in God to provide a family for me and waited on Him to fulfill that dream.

I wanted to experience having a good marriage where companionship, respect, honor, and love are mutual.

I dreamed of honoring my wife, being a good father and friend to my children, and building good memories as my parents had done for my brothers and sisters and me.

After praying for six years specifically, to have a family, God allowed me to meet my beloved wife, Yasmin.

I am amazed by everything God prepared for us. Today, we are a family—Yasmin, Agustin, Gael, and me, Dad. They’re the fruit of God in my life and of all the prayers I said during my single years.

In Psalm 37, David reminds us to delight in God, to worship Him, and to follow His commands: “Commit your way to the Lord,” the psalmist says, “trust in him” (v. 5).

If we trust God, He will do His will. When we take pleasure in serving God, He hears our spoken and unspoken prayers. He sees what our hearts desire—and He grants those desires that are according to His will (v. 4).

I entrusted my heart’s desire to God, and He responded beyond my expectations. In the process, I learned to trust Him more knowing that His plans are perfect, pleasing, and good (Romans 12:2).

As we wait on God, He helps us cultivate our faith in His will for our lives. If you live far away from your family and friends, form new friends at the church you attend so that they can be your new family.

Javier & Yasmin Yunes

After reading Psalm 37, what do you believe God wants for you and your family? How can you delight in God as you wait on Him to give you the desires of your heart according to His will?

Dear God, thank You for Your good, pleasing, and perfect will. Help me put my trust in You and Your timing.
