Secular Versus Sacred Mindset
Have you ever contemplated at your workplace that your employer isn't truly your ultimate boss? Or, if you're an entrepreneur, that the enterprise you run isn't truly yours alone? Could the revelation that God is your ultimate boss or the actual owner of your business affect your behaviour or the decisions you currently make in the marketplace? If you find yourself admitting, "Yes, I would behave differently," then you might be wrestling with a secular versus sacred mindset.
This mindset often creates a dichotomy in our lives, suggesting that some areas are secular (God isn't truly concerned with this part), and others are sacred (God is deeply interested in these aspects). It may lead us to believe that, "God isn't truly invested or involved in my business or work from Monday to Saturday, but He is incredibly concerned about my church activities on Sunday".
However, I want to reassure you through God's word that He is just as interested and involved in your everyday work life as He is in your Sunday worship!
Paul’s instruction in Colossians speaks directly against this dualistic mindset. His words remind us that in everything we do, we should commit wholeheartedly—as if we are serving God Himself. This applies to our work, our passions, and our diligence, even if it seems mundane or disconnected from our spiritual life. Because at the end of the day, it is God whom we are serving, not merely a company or customers. And in serving God, we can expect an eternal reward, far greater than any worldly success or recognition. It's a divine reminder to align all aspects of our lives to God's will and purpose, thus bridging the supposed divide between the secular and the sacred.
Reflection
- Can you identify any areas in your life where you carry an aspect of the sacred versus secular mindset? Invite God to show Himself present in the areas that you have not thought in the past that He was interested in.
