Sing, Sing, Sing - A Devotional From Anchor HymnSýnishorn
When We Walk Together
Early in my career I lost a job because I kept trying to do everything myself. I had a really hard time leaning on the rest of the team who worked there. It’s not that I did bad work, but nobody is the best at all the things a team might need to do. We have different strengths and we do better work together.
I think it’s an American idea, this notion that we all must be some sort of “rugged individualist." We’re not built to do that. Scripture tells us over and over that we are meant to lean on each other, and to carry one another’s burdens.
This is one of the enemy’s great lies, and it is so damaging. Even in our walks with Jesus, we can think that it’s all about US and what WE need to do to connect with Jesus. That it’s all on us to carry the pain of loss, heartache, and loneliness.
Followers of Jesus don’t have to be rugged individualists. We get to be in need. We need Jesus and we need each other. It’s how we survive, how we heal and how we grow. In the light and love of God, we are carried as we are carrying each other.
It’s one of the things I love about singing together in Church. I won’t lie, there are some Sundays where I’m not feeling super spiritual. I’m tired and worried about something with my job or my kids, and my mind is wandering all over the place. But I get to stand there in that room with people I’ve known and loved for so many years, and we’re all singing the same songs. Great is God’s faithfulness! Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound! What a friend we have in Jesus!
I need to hear my friends singing these songs to remind me of what’s true, and to bring me back home. They need to hear my voice, too. Even if the song is too high for that early in the morning. No one in that room needs me to be good, they just need me to be me.
What great comfort.
The night is always darkest just before the dawn.
When you’re feeling weary, you are not alone.
Amen.
