The Seriousness of Forgiveness

DAY 2 OF 5

The Weight of Forgiveness

To truly understand the gravity of forgiveness in our lives, we must first recognize the realm where it should be practiced. Jesus, in Matthew 18:23, identifies the realm when he says, “For this reason, the kingdom of heaven may be compared to. . . ” This introductory phrase highlights the importance of forgiveness in the lives of those who belong to the kingdom of heaven and are members of His family.

Forgiveness is not optional, but a requirement for every Christian. The Lord expects us to practice forgiveness, and failure to do so is considered disobedience.

We can easily focus on the sins that others have committed against us and view ourselves as the innocent party. However, Jesus teaches that we, too, are sinning if we refuse to forgive those who have wronged us. This realization should serve as a potent reminder that forgiveness is not just a kind gesture but a serious matter for all Christians.

The severity of unforgiveness as sin is emphasized in Jesus’s teachings. He warns of the severe discipline a believer may face in refusing to forgive others. This underscores the importance of forgiveness as a central aspect of our faith and relationship with the Lord. Unforgiveness is a sin, and granting forgiveness is a vital responsibility for every follower of Christ.

As you reflect on your spiritual journey, consider the role of forgiveness in your life. Do you view forgiveness as a requirement or as an optional kindness to be offered at your discretion? Strive to approach forgiveness with the seriousness it deserves. Recognize that, as a member of the kingdom of heaven, you are called to a higher standard of living than that of people who do not follow Christ. This standard includes a commitment to practicing forgiveness. By embracing this responsibility and actively seeking to forgive those who have wronged you, you will grow in your faith and demonstrate God’s love and grace to others.

The kingdom of heaven has significant implications for our spiritual growth and our relationship with the Lord. Let us commit ourselves to practicing forgiveness, recognizing its importance in our lives as Christians, and allowing the transformative power of God’s grace to work through us.
