DAY 3 OF 7

SMOKE

A few years ago when I was going through an incredibly dark time, my marriage was falling apart and consequently my life as well, I wrote James 1:19 on my hand every day. “Be slow to speak and quick to listen.” God’s polite way of telling me to “shut up and listen.”

My world had gone up in smoke. So I began to try to control, manipulate, and orchestrate my life in all the ways that I thought it should be, and it was only getting worse… and crashing down around me. It was only as I started to be quiet and wait on God for His lead and His plan and responding to that voice with faithfulness that I began to see Him making something beautiful from the ashes.

When you think about it, there is nothing so useless and lifeless as ash. That’s why when we describe something as going “up in smoke,” we mean a total, devastating loss. And when we say “beauty from ashes,” we mean the ultimate surprise of something great coming out of something hopeless.

Who is capable of such a miracle? Only God. Reflect on that as you read and pray the words of Psalm 33 today.

SMOKE

Though I walk through a valley
That feels worse than death
I am slow to speak, instead
I hear your voice
And it says come to me
You, the tired and heavy
And I will give you much needed rest

You are my hope
You are my song
You are the oxygen
Inside these weary lungs
You are my safe place
You are my home
You are my shelter
When it all goes up in smoke

Though, I have danced
With the devil and all of his friends
I am quick to see your hands
Offered to me
Hands that bear my scars
And feet that pull me towards him
I am humbled by your love for me

My healer
Provider
You are my God
Protector
My strength and shield
You are my God
