Daily Bible Reading – May 2023, God’s Saving Word: FaithSýnishorn
May 3
Introduction
Today’s reading teaches that we are surrounded by faithful witnesses from the past and present. This “large crowd” is like a hometown crowd cheering us on as we run the race of faith. The imagery of Mount Sinai is contrasted with Mount Zion and the heavenly Jerusalem, where people come to Jesus who has arranged the new covenant between God and God’s people. The chapter concludes with words of encouragement and a reminder that God’s kingdom cannot be shaken.
Scripture Reading
Hebrews 12:1-29
Today’s Key Verse: Hebrews 12:2a
Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, on whom our faith depends from beginning to end.
Reflect
In verses 7-11, the relationship between God and people is described as that of a father and child. What are your thoughts regarding the Lord correcting everyone he loves (verse 6)? What instructions are given in verses 12-17? How do these instructions about living as people of God impact life within a community of faith? The “heavenly Jerusalem” is referred to as “the city of the living God” (verse 22), also referenced in an earlier reading (11:10, 16). It is the heavenly place where those who are faithful to God will be with God forever. Reread verses 22-24. How do you envision what is described here?
Pray
Lord Jesus, keep my eyes fixed on you. My faith is dependent on you. You died on a cross and are now seated at the right side of God’s throne. I thank and praise you for your sacrificial love. With joyful praise and honor I worship you. Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
Psalm 85: A prayer for the nation’s welfare.
