DAVID & GOLIATH
The story of David and Goliath is one of the most iconic stories in the entire Bible. A teenage shepherd boy, the youngest in his family, defeats the greatest giant warrior to ever exist and delivers his nation.
It's inspiring and motivating, but it is so much more than that.
The point of this story isn't "look how great David is" but "look how great God is." Like many stories in the Old Testament, the story doesn't ultimately point to David, but to Jesus.
David defeated the Giant Goliath that stood in the way of God's people. The Son of David (Jesus) would later come and defeat the giant of Sin that stood in the way between God & people.
Just as David grew up in hiddenness & obscurity, so our champion, Jesus, came veiled in obscurity. Just as David came from Bethlehem and was of the lowly profession of a shepherd, so Jesus was born in Bethlehem and had the lowly profession of a carpenter.
Like David, Jesus was despised & rejected by His brothers and family but remained humble.
The is the Gospel: God sent His Son, Jesus, who took on human flesh. At the cross, Jesus defeated the greatest enemy—our Goliath—Satan himself and the curse of sin & death.
As we look at this story and what it represents, we aren’t David defeating the giant. We are Israel, the people who were unable to overcome and defeat the Giant Goliath. And Jesus, our champion, is the one who defeats the giant of sin and brings us into freedom!
