Full of WorrySýnishorn
A Good Father
The second reason why you can rest in the Lord and choose not to be afraid is that God knows and cares about what you need.
The focus of the Lord’s sermon on Matthew 6:25–30 is the necessities of life: eating, drinking, clothing, and even the span of our life. You don’t have to worry about these things. This is not an argument for laziness or irresponsibility. This is an argument against illegitimate concern, against being full of fear, as though God were not there or did not know or care, as if He would not take care of you. That is a sin.
I love that the Son of God is reasoning with us, “Trust me. Rest in me.” And notice the argument, “Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?” (Matthew 6:25) Why are you on this planet? God didn’t put you here just to exist. He has a purpose, a plan for your life. Life is more than eating and drinking and putting on clothes. God had a reason for your life when He formed you in your mother’s womb and when He saved you. Do you follow the logic? Until the day your purpose is fulfilled, you are guaranteed to exist. He will make sure you have food and clothing because your life is more than those things.
And then the Lord invites us to consider the birds; he says, “Your Heavenly Father feeds them” (Matthew 6:26). You’re not just His servant; you’re His child. By faith in Jesus Christ, you were adopted. You became a child of God. God is now your Father, and He feeds the birds. Are you not of more value than they?
What is the argument? Aren’t you a creature made in God’s image and now a child of God? If God takes care of birds, won’t He take care of those who He has redeemed by the blood of His Son? Won’t He take care of His children? Our Lord is asking us to think, to take note of how He takes care of creation. And remember, He made you, and He saved you. You’re His. Won’t He take care of you?
God has a purpose for you. Why are you afraid you’re not going to make it? Don’t you know He has more for your life than just making it?
About this Plan
What power does your worrying have? It is the most unproductive, impotent thing you’ll ever do. It changes nothing. Jesus teaches us it is all in God’s sovereign hands. God’s plan for your life is not helped by your anxiety. Our Lord knows what we need. He cares for us. He has a purpose for our lives, and He’s going to make sure it’s fulfilled.
