Money Matters: Devotions From Time of GraceSýnishorn
Giving Money God’s Way: Proportion
The way the IRS works, you can earn quite a bit of money before your income becomes taxable. All those below a certain level are excused from having to fund governmental services--they can ride for free.
God doesn’t manage his world that way. One of the most shocking stories in the New Testament is the story of the widow’s mite. A woman gave a contribution of several cents to her God at the temple. Jesus saw her do it and praised her for it to his disciples.
His point: all of God’s children are blessed and entrusted with the King’s treasures; all of God’s children are invited to return an honorable proportion to him. All of God’s children can enjoy the thrill of sharing their treasures so that the ministry of the Word can keep going out to people.
The concept is elegantly simple: “On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income” (1 Corinthians 16:2).
