Figure Out How You Can Live Out God’s Principles Today
Have you ever heard the statement, “God said it. I believe it. That settles it.”? Perhaps you’ve even said it yourself. Unfortunately, obeying God’s Word isn’t always as easy or straightforward as we’d like.
This is because Jesus doesn’t ask us to follow a long list of strict rules. He asks us to follow Him … to learn more about who He is, what He values, and what He wants so we can model our lives after His.
This reminds me of an incident shortly after receiving my learner’s permit. One of the first places I was allowed to drive on my own was to a small choir performance halfway across town. I drove there without any problems, but when it was time to go, I noticed one of my classmates I didn’t know well still hanging around. He didn’t have a ride home.
Technically, I wasn’t allowed to drive him. But I clearly remember asking myself, What would my dad do in this situation?
This was before I had a cell phone, so I couldn’t call and ask, and nearly everyone else had gone, so I couldn’t ask a friend. Instead, I had to rely on what I already knew about my dad, his values, and the choices he typically makes.
When I arrived home, I immediately told my dad about my decision to drive the classmate home. My dad wasn’t upset at all. He was happy to see I made it home safe and relieved to learn I had only driven a classmate home—not a random man on the side of the road, as he had initially misunderstood! (That would have been a hard no.)
So, what would your heavenly Father want you to do in the situations you’re facing? Do you know God well enough to know what He’s like, His choices, and what He values?
Keep getting to know God through His Word. The Bible may not give you an exact answer for the specific situation you’re facing, but the more you know God, His character, and His values, the better equipped you’ll be to ask yourself, What would my heavenly Father want me to do in this situation?
Read Psalm 103:1–18. What does this psalm tell us about God’s character? List ten adjectives describing what God is like.
