Discipleship & Radical WelcomeSýnishorn
Radical welcome.
It's what Jesus practiced. Humbling - real - welcoming. Close your eyes and picture Jesus washing the feet of His disciples (John 13). He kneels, and reveals what leadership looks like (verse 13-15). But Jesus closes this passage by giving a promise—if we receive those who are sent by Jesus, we receive Jesus Himself. And in receiving Jesus we also receive the Father Who sent Jesus. We should ask ourselves, "Who is Jesus sending to me today?"
To be able to welcome in a radical way we need to humble ourselves. Matthew18:3-5 tells us the conditions: We need to be become like the children, and humble ourselves. Again, Jesus Himself adds the promise: if we receive the other in such a way, we receive Jesus Himself. Amazing isn't it?
As you ponder these things it is important to put it into practice. Let the microCHALLENGE below be that opportunity to practice, the challenge to step out and 'do'.
Have you ever felt completely welcome? Just that someone welcomes you and makes you feel like you're allowed to be there, to be at home. Relaxed. Warm. Welcome. It feels good. In the Bible, you regularly read that Jesus receives people who are not welcome elsewhere: people who lived on the edge of society. With Jesus, they were welcome.
You often see Jesus eating with people. Of course with His disciples, but also with many others. In large groups, small groups, with corrupt tax officials and religious leaders. In this way, He meets all kinds of people. Jesus even says that if you receive one of the "least of these" in His name, you will receive Jesus Himself. Wow.
Who do you welcome?
In this microCHALLENGE, we challenge you to make someone feel welcome today. Maybe you can host them at home or have dinner somewhere. It doesn't have to cost a lot because you can also go to a park, chat, and listen to music—possibilities abound. Look for the opportunity today, the chance to let go of your agenda for a moment and welcome someone. In this, you resemble your Master, Jesus.
Challenge accepted?
Prayer:
- Ask Jesus to who you can be a blessing today; then show Jesus’ radical welcome.
